Remote working – “can I call you when I’m back in the office?”

You know the situation. You get a call from a client or a manager who needs to discuss a matter right now, but you don’t have the information at your fingertips. The information you need is on the office computer, and accessing it is, well, a little awkward.

It could be that your organisation is only set up for you to receive emails remotely. Or maybe they’ve given you a security token that you’ve left in your other coat. Or perhaps (if they’re really advanced), they have a system that sends you one-time passcodes by SMS, but you’re in a place where the mobile signal is non-existent.

Whatever the case, it means you’re stuck. You may have your laptop with you, with a WiFi connection, but without the ability to authenticate yourself, you are effectively locked out of the system. So you have to utter the excuse: “Would it be OK if I call you when I’m back in the office?”

It might be excusable if you’re due back within the hour. But what if you’re out all day, or on an overseas trip? Then it really becomes a problem, and underlines why mobile workers (an increasing part of the workforce) need to be able to connect remotely and securely, whenever and wherever they want.

Fortunately, the SecurEnvoy service provides just that. It allows users to choose how they wish to authenticate themselves, without the use of specialist security tokens. They may choose to receive one-time passcodes (OTPs) on their phone or their tablet. If they have any doubts about the mobile signal, they can opt to preload the OTP in their device, or even generate codes on the fly using the SecurEnvoy app.

The choice is theirs. They do not have a solution imposed on them by the IT department; they choose to work in the way that suits them. And it means they never have to rush back to the office just to answer a query when they could be out and about being far more productive!
